| Canada Jacks Makes Its Toronto Premiere |
|
November 07, 2005 Simple Truth Theatre's new Canadian play "Canada Jacks" makes its Toronto Premiere at Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace. Can an American really fall in love with Canada? Can that "great unknown" on the other side of the border really seduce a true patriotic American heart with nothing more than its people, culture, history and beauty? American lawyer Lee Larson claims to be the victim of just such a seduction. An impressionable youth raised in Detroit in the 1960s he was enchanted by the unabashed presence of the CBC, and the distinctly Canadian flavour of the radio station in Windsor. From his first journey across the border he has loved, pined for and embraced Canada. Having taken stalk of his life long love affair with Canada, Larson penned "The Province of Calgary", a wonderful collection of stories, anecdotes and observations of Canada from a uniquely American perspective. In this time of strained Canada/US relations the message of mutual respect and admiration that is woven throughout Larson's writing was one that we felt needed to be brought to the stage. Larson agreed and granted Simple Truth Theatre permission to adapt the collection. The result is "Canada Jacks" a one-man play written and directed by Xavier MacDonald, designed by Ed Rosing and featuring Richard Beaune in the title role of Jack. Now after a successful staging in August as part of the New Works Festival in Brampton Ontario "Canada Jacks" comes to Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace. It is obvious to all involved that we have an important piece of theatre on our hands, one that speaks for Canada from an American perspective, and one that binds rather than divides us and promotes tolerance of our differences. Performances: Tuesday, December 13th, 2005 to Saturday, December 17th, 2005 - 8:00 pm Tickets: |
